Description
Aphids are a common insect infestation of paddy plants. Mundakan crop is heavily infested by this pest. Adult pests are brown to 3.5 to 4.5mm in size. Legs pale; It is also black below the knee. The wings are transparent with brown markings and dark veins. The immature ones are brownish black with grayish blue eyes. The aphid infestation is more prevalent in fields with good sun and water and in low lying areas. The female lays two to twelve clusters of eggs by piercing the bark of the paddy plant. The eggs hatch within seven to eight days. Egg-laying insects nest at the base of the plant above the water level. The aphid takes 10-22 days to complete its life cycle. This causes occasional yellowing of the paddy plants and later scorching.
