Description
Fermentation is one of the diseases affecting cardamom. It is also known as Kaichiyal. In Kerala, fermentation disease is more prevalent in Idukki and Wayanad districts. The disease is caused by a type of fungus. The disease is exacerbated during the monsoon season. The disease affects all parts of the cardamom including leaves, chimps, stems and fruits.
The first symptom is similar to the spots that can occur when boiling water falls. As the symptom progresses, the leaf stalks dry out and cut off and hang at the base. Infected young shoots rot and twigs break.
