Cipadessa is a genus of plants belonging to the family Meliaceae.
Cipadessa is monotypic, with the single species
Cipadessa baccifera. The species is endemic to Western Ghats of India and Sri Lanka. It is a host plant for many moth species.
Cipadessa (Melia orientalis )is an important Ayurvedic medicinal plants. The plant part such as leaves and roots are traditionally used for the treatment of diabetes, edema, traumatic swelling, skin diseases, oligospermia and bleeding disorders. To investigate the phytochemical identification of ethanol leaf extract of MO. The fresh leaves of MO (1000g) were collected and shade dried at room temperature for 30 days and the dried leaves were made into a fine powder. The ethanol leaf extract obtained was dried and used for phytochemical identification by GC-MS analysis. The phytochemical screening studies have been carried out and identified ten chemical constituents present in the leaf extract of MO. Thus, our results show that MO possess important phytocomponents such as phytol, squalene and stigmasterol.
Characteristics:
It is a small shrub with only 5m tall. Leaves compound, imparipinnate; lamina elliptic, apex acute to acuminate; base acute, cuneate or attenuate with entire margin. Flowers are white colored and show axillary panicles inflorescence. Fruit is a globose drupe with 5 pyrenes.
Medicinal uses:
Leaves have powerful anti venom properties, especially for the treatment of cobra poison. Juice of the root is given in cases of indigestion. It is also used in treating cough and cold. A paste of bark is pressed against the teeth for about 15 mins to relieve bleeding and swelling of gums.
